The Lyrics of BBS Bonfire Night

Here's a small selection of what you'll hear on Barcombe Bonfire Night - and should be ready to recite!

Note the newly-discovered MP3 version of "Sussex by the Sea" linked to down the bottom of the page.

Bonfire Prayers

Remember, remember
The Fifth of November,
Gunpowder Treason and Plot;
I see no reason
Why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes
His intent
To blow up the King and his Parliament;
Three score barrels of powder below
Poor old England to overthrow;
By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and lighted match;
Holler Boys, holler boys, ring, bells, ring,
Holler boys, holler boys, God save the King!

And what shall we do with him?

BURN HIM!!

Sussex by the Sea

Now is the time for marching
Now let your hearts be gay
Hark to the merry bugles
Sounding along our way
So let your voices ring , my boys
And take your time from me
And I'll sing you a song as we march along
Of Sussex by the Sea.

For we're the men from Sussex
Sussex by the Sea,
We plough and sow and reap and mow,
And useful men are we:
And when you come to Sussex,
Whoever you may be,
You can tell them all that we'll stand or fall
For Sussex by the Sea.

Oh Sussex, Sussex by the Sea
Good old Sussex by the Sea
You can tell them all that we'll stand or fall
For Sussex by the Sea.

Light is the love of a soldier
That's what the ladies say
Lightly he goes a wooing
Lightly he rides away
In love and war, we always are
As fair as fair can be,
And a soldier boy is the ladies' joy
In Sussex by the Sea.

Chorus & Refrain

Far o'er the seas we wander
Wide through the world we roam,
Far from the kind hearts yonder
Far from the dear old home,
But never shall we forget my boys
And true we'll ever be
To the girls so kind that we've left behind
In Sussex by the Sea.

Chorus & Refrain

Note:There are a few histories of the song courtesy of the Royal Sussex Regiment and (to a lesser extent, but with an interesting theory on the song's roots) Wikipedia.

The Royal Sussex Regiment also provides the lyrics, including 2 verses over those listed above. If you want to hear the music (withour lyrics) then there's a Royal Sussex Regiment mp3, presumably as played by the Regiment itself, which is rather good. However, I have a slight preference for the Horsham Borough Band version (also mp3) as kindly provided by Eastbourne Cousins. Thank you to all of these sites.
